Goals
According to its founding statute, the purpose of the Society is "…the advancement of knowledge concerning all aspects of the geography of Greek regions, the promotion of geographical science in general, and the dissemination of geographical knowledge. The Society shall pursue the fulfilment of this purpose: a) through the publication of a dedicated journal and related materials, b) through the establishment of a National Geographic Archive, c) through scientific announcements, lectures, and field excursions, d) through the creation of a specialised library of books, maps, and images, e) through the organisation of scientific missions for the geographical investigation of areas of Greece and neighbouring countries, f) through the announcement of competitions and the awarding of prizes, g) and through any other means deemed necessary by the Board of Directors." The primary goal of the Hellenic Geographical Society is to enhance the standing of Geography as a scientific discipline in Greece through a wide range of activities offered to its members, such as:
- Organising conferences and other scientific events
- Producing various types of publications (conference proceedings, journals, and books)
- Supporting the discipline of Geography and Greek geographers
- Advancing the professional rights of geographers by intervening and advocating before institutions on behalf of its members
- Contributing to public life by providing geographical expertise to decision-makers in addressing spatial problems affecting the country
- Supporting the teaching of Geography at all levels of the Greek educational system
- Contributing to the advancement of geographical science through participation in the European Association of Geographers (European Association of Geographers – EUROGEO) and the International Geographical Union (International Geographical Union – IGU)
With vision, knowledge, and action, the Hellenic Geographical Society moves forward dynamically, highlighting Geography as a fundamental tool for understanding and addressing the challenges of the modern world.
